How to undergo a job interview in a public place

As some prospective employers might opt for an out-of-office meeting, it's important for candidates to remain focused and professional.

With many people still working from home and offices only just making the transition back to the workplace, employers might have to schedule job interviews in a location such as a shopping mall or coffee shop.

The more informal setting, however, might make it easier for interviewees to forget they should still conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Here are some tips on how to present yourself during a job interview in a public place.

1. Always be prepared

Confirm the exact location, right down to the specific coffee shop or seat corner. There are many franchises of international-brand coffee shops, so ensure you confirm the details to a tee.

Make sure you get the interviewer’s mobile number so you can call or text them in case you’re delayed. Be sure to ask how you will recognise them, and let them know what you look like or what you’ll be wearing.

Dress professionally, even if you are meeting at a fast-food restaurant. You might feel out of place in a suit and tie or dress and heels, but you should always err on the side of being overdressed than under-.

Prepare just as you would for an office interview. Research the company, have responses ready for anticipated interview questions, and have a list of questions to ask the interviewer in return.

Bring a portfolio and pad and pen so you can take notes. Or, if you’re more comfortable using a mobile device, bring your laptop. Don’t forget a few copies of your resume and references, if you have them.

2. Focus on the interview

It may be distracting in a public place due to noisy customers, piped-in music, and waitstaff coming and going. Try to focus on the interviewer as best you can.

Stay on topic. Even if you order a light snack to go with your coffee or tea, don’t think about the food; rather, focus on what you need to say to make a good impression.

Maintain good posture and watch your body language, as you don’t want to appear to be too laid back during the interview. (Rawpixel pic)

Your handphone might be another distraction. Be sure to put it on mute before you sit down for the interview.

3. Watch your manners

Be careful what you order from the menu. If you’re having a meal, choose something simple, and never order the most expensive item.

Avoid messy food like spaghetti or tacos, and always offer to pay for your own – don’t assume your interviewer will be picking up the bill.

Maintain good posture and be aware of your body language. While the setting is more casual, you don’t want to appear to be too laid back.

Don’t tend to your hygiene at the table. Excuse yourself to the men’s or ladies’ room to pick your teeth, brush your hair, or freshen your makeup.

4. Follow up

Make sure you follow up with a thank-you note, just like you would have if you had interviewed for the position in a corporate office, and check on the status of your candidacy by phone or email.
