If you are a new university student, you might be feeling anxious about how the next few years are going to unfold.

There are your studies to think about. You are looking forward to an active social life, to meet new people and perhaps even go on dates. You’ll want to enjoy campus life and get as involved as you can.

While the pandemic might make it harder to live on campus or engage closely with others, here are eight ways to make the most of your days in college or university. Look out for part 2 of this article tomorrow.

1. Participate in groups

Get involved. Join one or more of the various extracurricular groups on campus, such as the theatre department or a sports team.

You don’t need to commit to something that requires too much of your time unless you choose to, but joining a club will allow you to engage in what interests you. Plus, you will meet new people, which leads to the next point.

2. Build a social circle

Enjoy meeting people to hang around with, but be careful who you let into your inner circle. Remember, the friends you make in college might be your friends for life.

3. Look after yourself

As your university days are a time when major changes take place in your life, it would be a good idea to add new healthy habits such as daily exercise.

4. Avoid overindulgence

You are away from home and need to rely on yourself to make good decisions. Make wise and healthy choices, especially when it comes to indulgences such as food or drink.

5. Study daily

Last-minute cramming and all-nighters are stressful and never as fruitful as you’d like them to be. Keep on top of your readings and assignments by dedicating time to study every day.

6. Stay safe

Learn basic safety rules such as keeping your car locked and being aware of your surroundings. Ask for an escort from campus security if you are walking alone, and most of all, follow your instincts.

7. Keep in contact

Keep feelings of homesickness at bay by keeping in touch with people back home via Zoom, social media, or just picking up the phone.

8. Find a solitary pursuit

No matter how busy you are, you’ll always have some downtime. Don’t spend all of that time sleeping or surfing the internet – find a hobby that will allow you to destress while feeling productive.
