Having endured many years of severe acne and spending so much money on failed treatments, Angela decided to create her own coconut soap that has gone on to solve her sensitive skin woes.

PETALING JAYA:
For many teenagers and young adults, acne continues to be the bane of their everyday existence, especially for those with severe acne problems.

While there are many available treatment options out there, most are often too pricey, with some proving to be ineffective as well.

This was certainly the case for Angela, a Malaysian homemaker, whose acne problems were so persistent that they accompanied her into adulthood.

“I was hit with a trifecta of skin problems: acne, pigmentation issues and hypersensitive skin,” she told FMT recently.

“At one point, there was so much acne all over my face that I refused to leave my home. Foundation also didn’t help and l could still see the marks. I would just lock myself in my room and refuse to go out.”

Desperate for a solution, Angela spent huge amounts of cash on painful dermatology treatments and medication, only to end up being frustrated.

“My skin got worse and there were still no changes. That was when I decided to make my own soap using natural ingredients.”

Determined to overcome her acne woes for good, Angela took to the web and began researching the ins and outs of home-based soapmaking.

The process of soapmaking is not complicated, according to her, and provided that nothing goes wrong, you can have your own bar of soap in about 30 minutes.

Of course, given her lack of experience in the field of soapmaking, it began as a journey filled with trial and error.

“Sometimes, the soap would come out a little too soft. Other times, the soap would spoil and turn gross,” said Angela, who eventually figured out the right balance of ingredients needed to make the perfect soap.

From its white hue alone, her homemade soap doesn’t seem like much, especially since it is also without any fragrance. However, after she began using it to soothe her skin, she started to see results; her acne began to recede before disappearing altogether.

Inspired by the results and her new-found soap solution, Angela thus came up with Power Coconut Soap, her own brand of homemade soaps that seek to help others with their acne woes.

Her soaps are made from organic virgin coconut oil, an ingredient she selected for its naturality and according to her, it is safe for all to use.

“Anyone with sensitive skin can use my soap without a worry. They won’t experience any side effects,” she assured, adding that she personally checks the quality of the virgin coconut oil used in her soaps and chooses only the best type.

Angela also explained that it takes about one or two months for her soap to prove its worth. According to her, besides clearing acne, her soap also helps reduce pigmentation while brightening and moisturising one’s skin.

She has certainly not looked back since embarking on her soapmaking adventure and is also proud that she solved her acne troubles all on her own.

“I used to spend hundreds of ringgit, desperately trying to find ways to cure my skin condition but nothing seemed to work. But since I started using my own soap, I have been seeing nothing but improvements for my facial skin. Needless to say, I’m very happy and am proud of myself.”

With clear skin achieved, Angela is now looking into the possibility of experimenting with natural ingredients other than coconut oil.

Charcoal and turmeric are the most likely candidates at the moment, though Angela is still in the experimental process.

Like most Malaysian business owners, Angela’s fledgling enterprise has been affected by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, with the ensuing lockdowns making it impossible for her to promote her skin soothing soaps through direct sales.

With each bar of soap going for a reasonable RM25, Angela promises users, “Given enough time, you will definitely be satisfied and happy with the results.”
