Taiwan: a pilot’s sacrifice during the pandemic

Kevin Chen almost lost his job when Covid-19 reached Taiwan but the aviator still risked his life transporting medical equipment across the seas.

FMT in partnership with The Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT) brings you a Covid-19 “healer” from Taiwan.

Kevin Chen, 31, is a pilot for EVA Air and has worked for the international airline for seven years, flying both Boeing 777-300ER and 777F aircraft.

Although Taiwan never went into full lockdown, Chen still spent most of his time in quarantine.

Due to Taiwan’s strict quarantine regulations, pilots who transited at foreign cities were required to quarantine when they returned to Taiwan.

This meant that for every flight Chen piloted, he had to spend 14 days undergoing home isolation at a hotel. This led to him only working two or three flights a month at the time.

As a result, he spent most of his time away from his wife and two-year-old son.

While it was a very trying period for the pilot, Chen still took immense pride in delivering loads of medical equipment throughout Asia.

He and his crew were more than happy to play a part in helping others in their hour of need.
