FMT in partnership with The Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT) brings you a Covid-19 “healer” from Slovenia.
Mohamad Alburai is a Palestinian refugee from Gaza who arrived in Slovenia just over a year ago.
Back in Palestine, Mohamad was a volunteer for the Palestinian Red Cross, helping people there for over nine years and during the three periods of conflict. When he reached Slovenia, he joined the Slovenian Red Cross as well.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he and his fellow volunteers helped the homeless of Slovenia, by distributing supplies and even cooking for them.
Mohamad would search the streets of Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, to find those who needed help.
One day during his rounds, he found Jaka, a heroin addict who was reluctant to trust Mohamed at first, but was grateful when Muhamad treated his open wound.
When asked why Muhamad volunteered his time, his answer was simple: “Because I am human.”

Jaka Gasar was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. For the last ten years he has been working on a photography documentary that provides people with the opportunity to address, investigate and interpret topical or interesting issues. He started his professional photography career in 1997 at the Slovene daily ‘Dnevnik’ where he is still employed. Through his career, his photos were published in notable Slovene newspapers or magazines. His work has also been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, from which he has received many awards. View his portfolio here.
‘The Other Hundred Healers’ is an initiative by the non-profit organisation GIFT. The 240-page, full-colour, hardcover book can be purchased here at US$40 per copy for a minimum order of 20 copies.
