KUALA LUMPUR:
Cancer isn’t just a bump in the road. It is a traumatic, life-changing experience that would not only cause pain to the afflicted, but to the loved ones around them as well.

Those who have had the fortune, courage and strength to win the battle against the disease will be forever changed, most of them promising to do better at achieving a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Such is the case for Mei Ng and Aimee Soon, who are the founders of local womenswear label Wonder Me.

Both were diagnosed with breast cancer during pregnancy and became quick friends during treatment and recovery.

Apart from sharing the same circumstances, they also made a pact to pursue their passion once they both overcame this big hurdle.

Their goal was simple: to express themselves, dress up, doll up and feel beautiful once more.

“Nobody wants to have cancer, but the experience had, in a way, forced us to be stronger and more fearless in facing all kinds of hardship,” said Soon, who confessed that both of them felt haunted by their appearances post-chemotherapy.

“However, with courage and confidence, there is nothing we cannot overcome,” she added.

Fuelled by their determination to reclaim their pre-cancer selves and empower other women as well, the duo founded Wonder Me in 2017, a fashion platform that sells aesthetic dresses that combine both comfort and chicness.

Since its establishment, the brand has launched a series of capsule collections comprising casual to formal dresses, jumpsuits, rompers, shirts, outerwear, skirts, shorts and more – all sewn by local seamstresses.

All Wonder Me outfits exude cheerful, confident vibes that reflect the founders’ mindset as they focus on an entrepreneurial journey inspired by a harrowing experience.

“Through Wonder Me pieces, we aspire to channel positivity and confidence to women who are fighting their own battles.

“Remember, you are stronger than you think,” said Ng.

To celebrate and usher in the Year of the Ox, Wonder Me has launched their 2021 Chinese New Year Collection, which reimagines the traditional cheongsam with floral motifs, retro checked patterns, flowy silhouettes with ruffled details and functional pockets.
