Every day, ETX Studio presents an extraordinary number highlighting an unusual aspect of our times.

Today, it is the vast number of Michael Jordan-related items sold on eBay over the last decade — autographed basketball cards, sneakers, singlets, tickets, memorabilia — all of which contribute to a combined total of 17.2 million.

Considered to be one of the greatest athletes of all time, Michael Jordan has attracted droves of fans both on and off the courts.

A case in point is the unprecedented global success of his collaboration with Nike, which accounts for a considerable portion of Jordan merchandise sold around the world.

On the occasion of the broadcast of the final episode of “The Last Dance” on May 17 and its subsequent release on Netflix, the online auction platform eBay revealed that it had sold 17.2 million Michael Jordan-related items between January 2010 and April 2020.

Nostalgic and unconditional fans of the Chicago Bulls’ legendary number 23 have long been numerous. And the athlete’s definitive retirement in 2003 did little to change this, quite the contrary.

According to eBay, an average of 146 Michael Jordan-related items have been sold every hour over the last five years, and, in the last three months, more than 538,000 sales including the word “Jordan” have been made worldwide.

The recent documentary series “The Last Dance,” which looks back on the careers of Michael Jordan and some of his teammates in 1997-98, which was his final season with the Chicago Bulls, has also stirred passions and memories.

eBay reported a +285% increase in searches for collectible Michael Jordan cards in the wake of the first two episodes of the mini-series, which aired on ESPN on April 19.

For its part, the online clothing and footwear re-seller StockX reported an average increase of +76% in visits to pages for Jordan-related products every Sunday, when the episodes of the docu-series were broadcast in the United States.

Traffic to the Jordan 13 and Jordan 14 sneaker pages set new records for the site on May 17 when the final two episodes of “The Last Dance” aired on ESPN.
