Meow Meow: Only lemongrass for this cat, please

Unlike other cats that occasionally chew on grass, this six-year-old tabby has more refined tastes and prefers only lemongrass.

Meow Meow has a preference for lemongrass and makes no bones about it.

Many people are used to seeing their cats chew on grass. It’s thought to be instinctive and to aid in their digestion.

Well, David Leong’s cat, Meow Meow is no ordinary cat with ordinary tastes. Her culinary preferences include a very specific herb called lemongrass, known locally as serai.

David explains that Meow Meow strayed into his home six years ago from off the streets and was spotted chomping on the grass in his garden.

Taking a liking to her, David adopted Meow Meow and let her stay outside. He also regularly fed her the grass she seemed to like so much.

It was only later that he realised she particularly liked a pot of lemongrass and could often be seen sniffing around the pot, then chewing on the leaves with relish.

Meow Meow now lives indoors permanently with David and his family but if she doesn’t get her ration of lemongrass – a small leaf or two twice a week – she makes her discontentment known loud and clear.

If her meowing goes unnoticed, Meow Meow takes things into her own hands… err paws, and makes sure she plants herself next to David or any other family member as she was taught to do when given food.

When she does this, they know that Meow Meow has to be served her favourite lemongrass treat without delay.

If Meow Meow doesn’t get a twice-weekly ration of lemongrass, she brings the house down with her meowing.

David says that so far, the lemongrass has had no negative side-effects on her health although even the veterinarian registered surprise when told of Meow Meow’s strange addiction.

As to how Meow Meow earned her funny name? David says he only realised his newly adopted cat had not been named when asked what to write in the veterinary clinic’s registration card before her surgery for spaying.

When asked by the doctor what he called her, David replied, “Meow Meow” and so that’s precisely what the doctor jotted down on her card.

Needless to say, she happily answers to the name. So all’s well that ends well for Meow Meow, the lemongrass-munching feline.
