While char kuih teow, laksa, and cendol get all the attention in Penang, one of the must-eats for both locals and visitors alike is the humble apong. The stalls offering these tiny delightful morsels has been operating at the same Jalan Burma spot outside the Union Primary School for decades.
There are only two such stalls on the island, both offering the mini-sized mouth watering apong made with plenty of eggs, flour, ripe banana, corn, and a closely guarded secret ingredient.
Both apong guan are equally scrumptious and it’s a toss up on which is arguably the more famous of the two.
Each apong retails for RM0.60 and both stalls always have a small crowd surrounding them on weekends, surely an exercise in patience in the Malaysian climate.

The reward for enduring the queue is definitely worth it. The apong is sweet from the ripe banana and corn, savoury from the egg, and perfect in every way. The best way to enjoy them is to order enough to last the afternoon, and eat them while they’re still hot!

Apong guan has been in operation for some 50 years, with no heir apparent in sight, so if you’re longing for something that’s uniquely Penang, this is a stall not to be missed.
