This is the first of many whisky tastings that FMT’s Whisky Wizard has embarked on – the May 2019 Whisky Fling held in conjunction with UK’s Campbeltown Whisky Festival.
To sweeten things, there’s a little something free in it for FMT readers – but you’ll have to read on to find out.
The May 2019 Whisky Fling held at Single and Available’s BSC outlet recently featured two flights – Set 1 consisting of Kilkerran eight- and 12-year-olds and Set 2 of Hazelburn 10-year-olds and Longrow Peated.

Set 1: Kilkerran eight- and 12-year-olds
The Whisky Wizard started with the Kilkerran eight-year-old cask strength (55.7%) limited edition release, made at Glengyle distillery.
Nosing it hits you with the fruity notes of apricot and apple before settling into an earthier background. On the palate the smokiness is immediately obvious, followed by caramel and vanilla. The lightly peated finish is typical Campbeltown with a coastal sea salt ending.
Next up was the Kilkerran 12-year-old where oak notes were dominant, followed by dried fruit, cherries, and a hint of peat.
The palate was initially fruity with citrus notes and orange peel, then vanilla, butterscotch and a hint of honey in an enjoyable mix. The finish was velvety smooth with an oiliness and a saltiness that you’d expect from a Campbeltown dram.
Set 2: Hazelburn 10-year-olds and Longrow Peated
Hazelburn is one of three styles of whisky produced at Springbank, known for being triple distilled and unpeated, so Set 2’s Hazelburn 10-year-old was relaxed and flavoursome.
On the nose it brought up toffee apples, honey and pear with hints of vanilla. The palate had a good mouthfeel with bright notes of vanilla and lively fruity notes underneath. The finish was oily with a lingering sweetness.
The final whisky for the night and the Whisky Wizard’s favourite was the Longrow peated, a great entry-level dram perfect for Islay fans looking for something a bit different.
Sea salt and a leathery smokiness came to the fore in a maritime combination on the nose, whereas a light and sweet note of green grape provided a great contrast to the nose, ending with a blast of smoke. That salty smokiness returned from the nose providing a deeply satisfying ending.

Single and Available’s Whisky Fling
The Whisky Fling is a monthly get together organised by Single and Available, specialty stores that are dedicated to selling only Single Malt Whiskies in the Klang Valley.
The Whisky Fling is held every first Wednesday of the month at their Bangsar Shopping Centre retail outlet.
It is all about exploration, trying new whiskies produced in different countries, enjoying the best of what the whisky world has to offer and ultimately making new friends with fellow single malt connoisseurs as things get more boisterous towards the end of the event.

FMT’s Dave Avran, also known as the Whisky Wizard, pretends he knows everything about whisky just to get invited to special events where he shamelessly quaffs all he can lay his hands on.
