If you’re in Penang, it would be a sin if you did not pop into a hawker stall – any hawker stall for that matter – for a plate of steaming, hot-off-the-wok Char Koay Teow.
But if your standards are high, you really must head to No 5 Char Koay Teow at Macalister Road for some incomparable hawker fare.

This famous stall shares the same premises with a mixed-rice restaurant right at the corner of Macalister Road and Lorong Kinta. It is a walk-able distance from Komtar, and just a stone’s throw away from the well-known New Lane hawker centre.

There are two choices of Char Koay Teow here: a standard serving is priced at RM5.50, while the option fried with big prawns and mantis prawns goes for RM9.50.
You can’t go wrong with either. Both are served with cockles, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, chives, egg, and is placed on a single banana leaf.
The Char Koay Teow has plenty of good wok “hei”, with the prawns and noodles just ever so slightly charred to perfection.
The egg is deliberately undercooked so it’s slightly runny in consistency, giving the noodles a moist and flavourful finish.

The standard version is served with plenty of decent-sized prawns. However, if you’re a serious prawn lover, order the version with huge tiger prawns and bits of mantis prawns thrown into the mix.
If you’re a hardcore Char Koay Teow addict, you owe it to yourself to give this stall a try. Waiting time can be a tad long however, even when customer volume isn’t particularly high.
