LOS ANGELES:
In preparation for September’s PlayStation 4 release “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” Sony Interactive Entertainment and game studio Sucker Punch have been drip-feeding news about the game’s contents and characters.

Philanthropist and supervillain Mister Negative was one of the first reveals, with Kingpin, Electro, Rhino, and Vulture among others; a peak-fitness Peter Parker would be joined by sympathetic characters such as Mary Jane, aunt May, and even Miles Morales.

During its showcase presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, PlayStation had confirmed a number of those supervillain identities through a flashy seven-minute video.

The sequence culminated in a face-off between five supervillains, but stopped short of revealing a mystery sixth character.

That person’s identity may now be known, after voice actor Chris Jai Alex mentioned them in passing; Alex plays Rhino in the game, but in describing a fight scene he namedropped iconic Spider-Man opponent Doctor Octopus.

The accidental reveal was part of a conversation with YouTube video creator Drift0r, who was trying to find out more about the multiplayer mode of October’s “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4,” something that Alex is also involved with.

Though the original video has been removed, the gaffe did not go unnoticed, with Eurogamer isolating it to a clip uploaded by another YouTube user.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man” was one of four exclusive games shown at PlayStation’s E3 briefing, and the only one with a concrete release date; “The Last of Us Part II,” “Ghost of Tsushima” and “Death Stranding” have not yet been confirmed for 2019.

Putting additional pressure on “Spider-Man” is an unusually congested late 2018 release window, hence a publicity campaign that emphasizes exclusive characters, unlockable costumes, and Spider-Man’s fluid and athletic combat and city-wide traversal.

Arriving mere days before the “Spider-Man” September 7 release date is a major expansion for “Destiny 2”; the week after is action adventure “Shadow of the Tomb Raider.”

At the end of the month “FIFA 19” is made available before October sees launches for “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4,” “Battlefield V” and “Red Dead Redemption.”
