Their preparations, unlike those of men, often go beyond looking at “value for money” deals or planning an itinerary that will fully maximise the travel experience.
“What do I need to go there as a woman?” is a question that many face, says avid traveller Marina Mahathir.
According to her, the issue of dressing, particularly in conservative countries, is one of the biggest challenges for women travellers.
Another concern that she and other women have is the possibility of sexual harassment.
That is why she and her team at travel site Zafigo.com are organising a three-day ZafigoX convention catered specifically for women travellers.
The convention, to be held from Aug 29 to 31 at Penang’s Royale Chulan Hotel, will see a range of local and international speakers sharing travel experiences and safety tips, among others.
“This will be the first event on women and travel in Asia,” Marina said at the launch of ZafigoX here on Wednesday.
“There’s a woman who is cycling around the world, she’s from Korea. She will talk about her journey, and also the things she encounters which women particularly face, such as sexual harassment.
“That’s an important thing for us to talk about, so we can be prepared.”
She was referring to South Korean cyclist Jin Jeong, one of the many speakers lined up for the event.
Other speakers include Petrina Thong, who made headlines last year after hitchhiking back to Malaysia from Sweden.
Marina and her team aim to make the convention a space where women will feel comfortable and safe enough to speak about issues they may not normally want to voice.
“There will be laughter and tears, and hopefully a little enlightenment amidst the most amazing, non-judgemental and supportive group you could wish for,” said Marina, who is also a social activist.
Tickets for the convention start at US$149 per person, but group deals are also available at US$516 for four people.
