What makes it even more outstanding is that this is the second consecutive year that he is being nominated for the Best Male Mandarin Artist award. Namewee is up against superstar singer-actor Jay Chou, Yoga Lin, Kuo Hsiang, Crowd Lu, Dwagie and Khailil Fong in the category.
The 28th Golden Melody Awards and Festival Facebook page featured a live video of the nominations for the awards, which is scheduled to be held on June 24.
The nomination for Namewee comes on the back of his work for the Cross Over Asia album which was released last year.
Namewee has been in the spotlight quite regularly over the years for the good and the bad side of his creativity.
Among these are his part satire, part rants in songs about Malaysia, and against utility company Tenaga Nasional, and a music video for a song called “Oh My God!”.
However, his movies have been lauded, namely Nasi Lemak 2.0 which featured a good mix of local actors and singers, including Afdlin Shauki, Adibah Noor and David Arumugam.
His last movie, Banglasia, was also too controversial a topic for local authorities who decided to ban it in 2015. The movie made its world premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival in July the same year.
