We saw Kentucky Fried Chicken do it when our staple food of rice was added into their menu. You can also feast on nasi lemak for breakfast at A&W, while Pizza Hut localised their menu with their sambal-topped pizzas.
McDonald’s has done it many times too, from their Mata Kucing sundae to the all-time favourite bubur ayam.
Now the fast-food chain has infused another much-loved local favourite into their breakfast menu.
Would you ever have thought you could order “cakoi” at McDonald’s one day?
Well, you can now. Crispy cakoi, or deep-fried dough, is now available from 4am to 11am every day, with a choice of three dips: chocolate, strawberry or kaya.
Having mixed feelings over this latest addition, some McDonald’s regulars took to Facebook to share their thoughts on this attempt at localisation, being promoted as Cuba-Cuba Cakoi.
Facebook user EeQuin Chow felt disappointed, tagging a photograph of the said cakoi as “overrated” and “so expensive and not worth it.”
Another user Angeline Yee however said that it was not the taste that mattered, but the memories.
“Thank you McDonald’s for the new breakfast set of Cakoi – one of our favourite traditional ways to enjoy our breakfast. It is not the taste that matters but the memories that come into your mind while having the breakfast! I’m loving it,” she said.
In Italy, however, something entirely different was created, and has become such a hit, it’s been described as a taste of heaven, if some Facebook comments are anything to go by.

It’s a Nutella burger called “Sweety con Nutella” or “soft bread with a creamy, indulgent centre!”
The announcement on McDonald’s Italia’s Facebook page has now garnered more than 72,000 shares.
Perhaps we could start petitioning McDonald’s Malaysia to introduce the Nutella Burger here as well. But for now, make a breakfast date tomorrow and load up on some traditional cakoi.
