PETALING JAYA:
National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky has taken to task some of his players over their quarter-final exit from the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) 2026 in Ningbo, China, yesterday.

He was especially critical of top national women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, saying that “they played negatively” in the last eight, Bernama reported.

In a lethargic performance, Pearly-Thinaah, ranked world No 2, went down tamely to their Chinese rivals, Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min, ranked seven rungs below them, in straight games of 13-21, 15-21 in 41 minutes.

He then took aim at mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei over their loss to the relatively unknown South Korean pair Kim Jae Hyeon-Jang Ha Jeong by a score of 19-21, 17-21.

Rexy described the defending world champions’ performance as totally “out of order”.

However, he did not give reigning men’s doubles champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik the same treatment following their loss to South Korean pair Kang Min Hyuk-Ki Dong Ju.

He said the Koreans played exceptionally well to shatter Aaron-Wooi Yik’s hopes of retaining the title after a 19-21, 28-26, 13-21 defeat.

“They (Min Hyuk-Dong Ju) made few errors and in terms of aggressive rotation, the opponents were also better than Aaron-Wooi Yik,” Rexy was quoted as saying.

Yesterday’s results marked Malaysia’s first medal-less campaign at the BAC since the 2019 edition in Wuhan, China.
