
Early this morning, men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Ong Yew Sin-Toh Ee Yi joined the five pairs who had booked their last 16 berths last night and on Tuesday.
They are men’s doubles pairs Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, and mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie.
Early this morning, world No 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik made amends for their first-round exit at the Denmark Open last week by defeating Indonesian pair Leo Rolly Carnando-Bagas Maulana in a tight game.
The Malaysians won 21-15, 26-24 in a match lasting 45 minutes at the Glaz Arena in Cesson-Sevigne, France, which saw them saving two match points before emerging winners.
Their second-round opponents are compatriots Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, who beat Indian pair Krishnaprasad Sai Pratheek-Krishnamurthy Roy in straight games.
This was followed by world No 4 Sze Fei-Izzuddin who were given a scare by the 10th-ranked Denmark Open champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayash, who took the first game before losing the match in 52 minutes with a score of 21-15, 19-21, 11-21.
Sze Fei- Izzuddin will be meeting Taiwanese pair Lee Jhi Huei-Yang Po Hsuan in the second round.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun are expected to have a tough match in the last 16 as they will be taking on English pair Ben Lane-Sean Vendy, who have been showing good form in the last three tournaments.
They beat Malaysian pairs Aaron-Wooi Yik, Sze Fei-Izzuddin and Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong in the last three World Tour Championships. Wei Chong-Kai Wun have beaten them in their only encounter so far.
Arif-Roy King will play China’s Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han while Pearly-Thinaah meet Bao Li Jing-Zhang Zhu Xian, also from China, in the second round.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei will clash with Taiwan’s Ye Hong Wei-Nicole Gonzales Chan while Soon Huat-Shevon will take on Alexander Dunn-Julie MacPherson of Scotland.
