PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia is guaranteed a place in the Denmark Open mixed doubles semi-finals after world champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei advanced to the quarter-finals, setting up a clash with compatriots Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai.

The world No 4 pair beat China’s Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying 21-14, 21-11 in a match that lasted only 33 minutes, extending their head-to-head dominance over the Chinese duo to 2-0.

Soon Huat-Shevon and Tang Jie-Ee Wei are evenly matched, having split their six previous encounters with three wins each.

They last met at the World Tour Finals semi-finals last December, where Tang Jie-Ee Wei won in three games.

The mixed-doubles pairs’ performance offered a measure of consolation for Malaysia after a disastrous opening round that saw seven other representatives eliminated, including top men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.

Adding to their woes, the World Championships runners-up and reigning Arctic Open champions Pearly Tan-M Thinaah were ousted in the second round by the new Japanese pairing of Arisa Igarashi-Chiharu Shida, losing 8-21, 9-21 in 35 minutes at Arena Fyn in Odense, Denmark.

The Denmark Open, a BWF World Tour Super 750 event, offers a total prize money of US$950,000. Winners in the doubles categories will take home US$70,300, while runners-up receive US$33,250. Semi-finalists earn US$13,300 and quarter-finalists pocket US$5,937.
