Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani defeated Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita, 21-19, 21-18 in a match that lasted 38 minutes.

However, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun were made to slog for 65 minutes to overcome China’s Huang Di-Liu Yang in three games – 21-19, 14-21, 22-20.

With these wins, six Malaysian men’s and mixed doubles pairs have so far made it to the quarter-finals of the lucrative World Tour Super 750 championships being played at the Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo.

Earlier today, mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, as well as men’s doubles pairs Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi booked their spots in the quarter-finals.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin, the defending champions, were drawn to play the winners of the encounter between Indonesian world No 5 pair Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri and the 20th-ranked pair Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard from Denmark.

As for world No 7 pair Wei Chong-Kai Wun, they have another tough tie when they face their opponents from South Korea, world No 3 pair Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae who have been playing extremely well this season.

The South Koreans entered the finals of six World Tour events this year, winning the Malaysia Open, German Open, All-England championships and the Indonesia Open titles.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun last met Won Ho-Seung Jae at the French Orleans Masters for the first time in March where the South Koreans won in straight games.

Winners in the doubles events will pocket US$70,300 (RM299,148) and the runners-up US$33,250 (RM141,494).
