PETALING JAYA:
Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik failed to win their first title on home soil after suffering a shock defeat at the hands of compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the men’s doubles final at the Malaysia Masters today.

World No 3 pair Aaron-Wooi Yik lost 12-21, 21-15, 16-21 in a three-game thriller lasting 50 minutes at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

It was the fourth World Tour Super series title for Wei Chong-Kai Wun, and their third win over Aaron-Wooi Yik in five encounters so far.

For Wei Chong-Kai Wun, it was also their second victory in a Super 500 series final this year. In January, they defeated world No 4 pair Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto to win the Indonesia Masters title.

It also marked their ninth World Tour final so far, with four titles to their names. Besides today’s title, they won the Taipei Open in 2022 and 2023, and the Syed Modi International in 2022.

The win also marked the end of a 12-year title drought for Malaysia in the men’s doubles event at the Malaysian Masters. Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah were the champions in 2013.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun earned US$37,525 (RM159,000) while Aaron-Wooi Yik took home US$18,050 (RM76,542).

Reigning Asian champions Aaron-Wooi Yik were hoping to win the title to break the duck on home soil and best their personal record by winning three titles in the same year, but it was dashed by their compatriots.

They have won four overall international titles, namely the Denmark Open in 2023, the Korean Masters a year later, the Badminton Asia Championships in April, and the Thailand Open last week.
