PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia Airlines saw a 130% increase in cancelled flights last year, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

In a written parliamentary reply, Loke said the national carrier cancelled 3,612 flights in 2023 and 8,319 flights in 2024.

He also said the airline’s 7,330 delayed flights last year marked a 3% drop compared with its 7,557 delayed flights in 2023.

AirAsia, meanwhile, saw a 23% drop in cancelled flights (from 39,884 in 2023 to 30,840 in 2024) and a 7% decrease in delayed flights (from 20,274 in 2023 to 18,825 in 2024).

Loke said Malaysia Airlines received 375 complaints in 2023 and 410 complaints in 2024, a 9% increase.

AirAsia, on the other hand, received 994 complaints in 2023 and 569 complaints in 2024, a 43% drop.

He said the average price for domestic flight tickets was RM227 in 2024 and RM220 in 2023, with the capacity for domestic flights increasing by 1.3% in 2024 over that of 2023.

The average ticket price for Asean flight routes went down slightly from RM360 in 2023 to RM358 in 2024, a drop of 0.4%, he said.

For other international routes, the average ticket price decreased from RM1,402 in 2023 to RM1,273 in 2024, or a 9% decline.

This reduction was due to the significant increase in capacity for international routes recorded in 2024, which saw a 22.3% increase over the capacity in 2023.

Loke said the transport ministry, through the Malaysian Aviation Commission, constantly monitors the prices of flight tickets, the number of complaints, delays, and cancellations involving domestic routes by domestic airlines.

He was responding to a question by Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Semporna) about statistics for flight ticket prices, the number of complaints, delays and cancellations for domestic routes operated by Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia for the period of 2023 and 2024.
