PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia got off to a disastrous start at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships, losing 2-3 to Hong Kong in their opening Group B tie today.

Malaysia will have to win their final group tie against Indonesia tomorrow if they want to make the quarter-finals of the tournament, which is being played in a round-robin format.

Indonesia are in a formidable position to qualify for the next stage, having thrashed Hong Kong 5-0 at the Conson Gymnasium in Qingdao, China, yesterday.

Today’s result was largely due to the lethargic performance of the Malaysians.

Mixed-doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin were expected to give the Malaysian team their first point but lost to Hong Kong’s scratch pair Ng Tsz Yau-Tang Chun Man 21-17, 17-21, 11-21.

Women’s singles shuttler K Letshanaa salvaged some hope by defeating Saloni Samirbhai Mehta 21-18, 21-18 in the second match.

However, singles shuttler Justin Hoh lost to Lee Cheuk Yiu 19-21, 16-21.

Hong Kong sealed their win when women’s doubles pair Yeung Nga Ting-Yeung Pui Lam beat Malaysia’s Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing 21-17, 21-14.

In the last match, men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun provided some consolation  by beating Hong Kong’s Lui Chun Wai-Hung Kuei Chun 21-13, 21-11 to keep the final score at 2-3.
