PETALING JAYA:
Former national men’s singles shuttler Liew Daren has been suspended from taking part in any badminton-related activities for 12 months by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for betting violations and match-fixing.

BWF also suspended Jerry Gan, a performance analyst with the National Sports Institute, for three months for betting on matches and failing to report Daren’s actions to the federation’s integrity unit.

A BWF independent hearing panel found that Daren had bet on a badminton tournament in 2018 as a “restricted participant”, when he was still a player.

He was also found to have obstructed investigations by failing to provide complete information to the inquiry panel, which found his actions to be in violation of BWF’s judicial procedures.

“Evidence also revealed several years of involvement in these illegal activities from phone records, financial documents and chats.

“Neither of these individuals appealed the independent hearing panel’s decision. The decision is therefore final,” it said.

Daren retired as a player in April 2023. At his peak, he was ranked World No 10.

He was an assistant coach for national single’s shuttler Lee Zii Jia before quitting in December 2023.
