Weightlifter Aznil bags Malaysia’s second gold in Birmingham

He lifted a total weight of 285kg setting a new national record in the men's 61kg category.

The national weightlifting squad has managed to bag Malaysia’s second gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games here.

Aznil Bidin secured the gold after he lifted a total weight of 285kg in the men’s 61kg category, setting a new national record.

The Kedah-born weightlifter, snatched 127kg and 158kg for the clean and jerk.

In accomplishing the feat, the 28-year-old athlete also managed to defend his title won in the 2018 Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Papua New Guinea athlete Morea Baru won the silver medal with a total weight of 273kg, while the bronze went to Gururaja Poojary from India with a weight of 269kg.

Earlier today, Aniq Kasdan won the first gold medal for Malaysia with a combined total of 249kg in men’s 55kg category.
