At a press conference, Ahmad Faizal Azumu said that with national badminton player Lee Zii Jia having pulled out, the target of winning gold in the men’s singles in badminton had to be revised.
He said the same went for the women’s doubles in squash in light of national women’s No 1 S Sivasangari’s recent injury following a car crash.
He said discussions between the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), the National Sports Council (NSC) and the National Sports Institute of Malaysia (ISN) had been held to determine a suitable new target.
“Based on the latest developments and the performance of the national diving team at the world championships, OCM, NSC and ISN have set a target of six gold medals to be achieved by the Malaysian contingent.”
The gold medals targeted were for aquatic diving, weightlifting, badminton, gymnastics, lawn bowling and powerlifting.
Previously, Zii Jia dropped a bombshell online when he announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Games in Birmingham, England, citing difficulty coping with the tight schedule.
He said the main reason for doing so was to focus on the World Championships in Tokyo in August.
