KUALA LUMPUR:
The national women’s football team’s dream of making the semifinals of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) 2022 Championship were dashed when they fell to a 0-4 defeat to Thailand in a Group A match in Binan in the Philippines last night.

The Malayan Tigress squad went on a mission of securing at least a draw but were overawed by Thailand’s superiority, with the White Elephants squad opening the scoring in the 25th minute through Ploychompoo Somnuek.

Thailand’s 1-0 lead remained that way until the break, but nine minutes into the second half, they struck again through Pattaranan Aupachai.

The Thais stretched their lead in the 73rd minute through a U-Raiporn Yongkul strike and with four minutes left, they completed the drubbing with their fourth goal of the night courtesy of Nutwadee Pram-Nak.

The defeat saw Jacob Joseph’s squad in fourth place after collecting just two points so far from their group matches, while Thailand are in second spot with 10 points.

Malaysia will complete their group matches by playing the Australian Under-23 squad on Tuesday, with two draws and two defeats to show so far.

Meanwhile, host team the Philippines maintained their winning streak after downing Indonesia 4-1 to stay on top of the table with 12 points, while Australia U-23s also scored a 4-1 victory over Singapore to climb to third place with seven points.

In the 2019 edition, Malaysia failed to make it to the last four when they could only secure third spot after their group matches with two wins from four matches.

The national women’s squad’s best showing in the AFF Championship was advancing to the semifinals in the 2007 edition.
