VINH PHUC:
Malaysia won the SEA Games men’s team gold for the first time in two decades, defeating Thailand 2-1 in the finals.

The men’s team of Ervin Chang, Marcus Lim, K Rhaasrikanesh and A Nateeshvar delivered a commendable performance at the Heron Lake Golf Course & Resort en route to dethroning the defending champions and securing Malaysia’s 24th gold medal.

Ervin, who had just made history by winning the country’s first ever men’s individual title in the biennial Games, defeated Weerawish Narkprachar 2-1, while Marcus was defeated 1-0 by Ratchanon Chantananuwat, tying the match.

Rhaasrikanesh, the team’s final man on the course, saved Malaysia with a 1-0 victory over Pongsapak Laopakdee.

Malaysia had won the men’s team event only twice, in 1989 and 2001, with Airil Rizman Zahari, S Sivachandhran, Shaaban Hussin and Sahal Saedin leading the way at the 2001 home edition.

Meanwhile, the women’s team of Mirabel Ting and Jeneath Wong had to settle for silver after losing 1.5-0.5 to Thailand.

Mirabel played it square to share the spoils with Natthakritta Vongtaveelap.

Jeneath, the bronze medallist in the individual event, was defeated 1-0 by Eila Galitsky, while the Malaysian team’s complaint to force a playoff due to a technical error by a caddy was unsuccessful.

This is the golf team’s best-ever performance, with two gold medals, a silver and a bronze.
