KUALA LUMPUR:
Panasonic, the latest foreign manufacturer to have been hit by severe flooding in the country, announced today the temporary suspension of production at its factory near here.

Panasonic said it expected the plant in Shah Alam, Selangor, to be closed for at least a week, halting its production of vacuum cleaners, ceiling fans and exhaust fans for Southeast Asian markets.

The company said it is currently inspecting the equipment inside the facility.

On Monday, Daihatsu Motor suspended operations at two plants belonging to Perodua, its local joint venture company. No date has yet been given for reopening them.

The suspension came after a supplier was hit by floods, interrupting procurements.

Perodua’s production volume for the fiscal year ending in March 2021 was some 230,000 vehicles, which represented about half of Daihatsu’s production overseas.

Malaysia is experiencing its worst floods on record, and tens of thousands of people have been displaced.
