S’pore hits new high of 1,504 Covid-19 cases, 2 unvaccinated women die

PETALING JAYA:
A record high 1,504 Covid-19 cases were reported in Singapore yesterday, their health ministry said last night, bringing the island’s total number of cases to 82,860.

This figure beat the previous record of 1,457 set only the day before, with cases continuing to surge in the country.

The ministry also reported the deaths of two unvaccinated women aged 71 and 93, taking the total number of fatalities since the pandemic began to 70. The former was suffering from cancer, while the latter had a history of heart failure, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Of the cases, 1,218 were in the community, 273 came from dormitories and 13 were imported, the Straits Times reported.

Large clusters were reported at Maple Bear pre-school and at two workers’ dormitories.

The school has reported 12 total cases among staff, students, and family members, while the Bukit Batok Road/Plantation Crescent and Tampines dormitories have identified 23 and 26 total cases, respectively.

Of the new cases, 86 were below the age of 12, with 529 children testing positive in a little over a week.

There are currently 1,120 Covid-19 patients warded in hospital, of whom 163 require respiratory assistance, up 145 from the day before.

The patients categorised as seriously ill include 155 senior citizens above the age of 60.
