Singapore records 1,012 Covid-19 cases, a new high this year

According to the health ministry, two new clusters were detected at nursing homes, while one new cluster involves a pre-school with nine children testing positive.

More than 80% of the population has been fully vaccinated in Singapore.

Singapore’s health ministry reported 1,012 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, three more than the 1,009 on Saturday, making it a new high since April last year, Reuters reported.

On April 23, 2020 there were 1,037 new Covid-19 cases reported.

According to the health ministry, there were 1,009 local cases – 321 of whom were senior citizens above 60 years – while three cases were imported.

Of the local cases, 919 were in the community and 90 cases were among dormitory residents.

The number of cases in the island republic, where more than 80% of the population have been vaccinated, has been climbing steadily in recent weeks and had achieved new highs for the past three days, with 935 new cases reported on Friday.

The total number of Covid-19 infections in Singapore now stands at 77,804.

More significantly, the health ministry said two new Covid-19 clusters were reported at nursing homes, with transmission detected among residents and staff.

One was the Woodlands Care Home with 12 cases, of which 11 are residents, and the other was Windsor Convalescent Home in Pasir Panjang with 10 cases, of which nine are residents.

Another cluster involved pre-schoolers with nine children and two teachers at My Little Campus in Yishun having tested positive.

These three new clusters are among 16 clusters that the Singapore health ministry is currently monitoring, Reuters reported.

There are currently 873 Covid-19 patients in hospital, up from 863 on Saturday.
