TOKYO:
Shuttler Cheah Liek Hou is just a step away from carving history as the first Paralympic badminton champion for Malaysia after making the men’s singles SU5 (physical impairment) final this morning.

The 33-year-old lost the first game but bounced back to oust Fang Jen-yu of Taiwan 15-21, 21-10, 21-16 in the last four stage at the Yoyogi National Stadium.

The world No 2, who had a slow start, was trailing for most of the first game before losing 21-15.

Liek Hou, however, returned more energetic and pumped up for the second game, leading 11-6 by the interval before levelling the tie by winning 21-10.

In the decider, though the fight was close in the beginning, six-time world champion Liek Hou showed his superiority to win the game 21-16 and secure his place in the final.

Liek Hou is set to face world No 1 Dheva Anrimusthi of Indonesia for the gold medal at 3pm Malaysian time.

Dheva beat world No 3 compatriot Suryo Nugroho 21-13, 21-15 in the other semifinal.

Tokyo 2020 marks badminton’s debut in the Paralympic Games programme.
