CROATIA 3 SPAIN 5
FRANCE 3 SWITZERLAND 3 (Switzerland win on penalties)
At risk of going home after two limp draws, Spain showed character in an epic 5-3 extra time win that has left fans purring. They went behind after goalkeeper Unai Simon failed to control a Pedri back pass and allowed the ball to roll into the Spanish goal. Then, after going 3-1 up they conceded twice in the last 10 minutes and had to do it all over again in added time with much-maligned Alvaro Morata scoring their fourth. This version of Spain might not be the classic team of a decade ago, but they’re certainly not going away easily.
FUN FACT: Pedri’s bizarre own goal from 49.4 yards is the longest-ever netted in the Euros and the first scored from outside the box.
TONIGHT …
ENGLAND vs GERMANY
Wembley, London, 12am
A quarter of a century on from their infamous encounter at Euro 96, this match-up not only sees a meeting of two old foes, but also of two opposing forces within the same country. England fans’ dread of facing Germany is contrasted with the ever-present hope that “football’s coming home” and that the Three Lions’ long wait for a major trophy is finally coming to an end. This match could either make or break England’s summer.

SWEDEN vs UKRAINE
Hampden Park, Glasgow, 3am
After Sweden scored a late winner to top Group E last week – unwittingly sending Ukraine into the last 16 – the teams now clash in Glasgow to prolong their Euros dream. Their route to the knockouts could not have been any different, with the in-form Swedes facing their fortunate opponents who qualified with just three points and a negative goal difference. Look for the lively Alexander Isak to trouble the Ukrainians in Scotland.
