According to a report in The Guardian, Amalia, the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander wrote a letter to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on the matter.
In the letter, Amalia, who passed her school-leaving exam this week, said she did not want her allowance until she had proper royal duties.
“On Dec 7, I will be 18 and, according to the law, receive an allowance. I find that uncomfortable as long as I do not do anything for it in return and while other students have a much tougher time of it, particularly in this period of coronavirus.”
The letter was published by Dutch public broadcaster NOS. Amalia plans to take a gap year before continuing with her undergraduate studies.
She also said she would repay the €300,000 a year income she was entitled to so long as she was a student.
This is the first time a member of the Dutch royal family has declined the tax-free salary and allowance.
The Dutch government approved a royal budget of €47.5 million in 2021.
