KUALA LUMPUR:
McDonald’s Malaysia has denied channelling aid to Israel, as alleged on social media, and said the local company is fully-owned by Muslims.

The operations of McDonald’s franchise in Malaysia are run by Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd, whose managing director and local partner Azmir Jaafar said the company had been fully taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Reza Group with a local business partner since 2017.

Azmir Jaafar.

He said Mcdonald’s Malaysia does not contribute, support or be involved in any political or religious conflicts in any country.

He said in a statement that a viral WhatsApp message calling for a boycott of the brand was unsubstantiated and described the statement about the brand channelling assistance to Israel as a blatant lie and slanderous.

Azmir added that a police report had been lodged about the false claim, and the matter had been referred to the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission for further action.
