Kepayan prison in Kota Kinabalu under EMCO from tomorrow

Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this followed the surge in Covid-19 cases.

The enhanced movement control order will involve 3,511 people, including prisoners and prison staff.
PETALING JAYA:
Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Kepayan prison and its staff quarters in Kota Kinabalu will be placed under enhanced movement control order (EMCO).

He said the EMCO for the prison will begin tomorrow (Oct 20) and will be in force until Nov 2.

The EMCO will involve 3,511 people, including prisoners and prison staff.

Of the 3,511 people, 2,914 are prisoners and 597 are staff at the Kampung Matambai prison quarters.

The two areas will be under total lockdown until Nov 2.

He said the EMCO will be implemented to contain the spread of the virus in the prison and staff quarters.

“The EMCO will make it easier for the authorities to control movements in the area and to conduct Covid-19 screening.”

Ismail added food will be distributed by the Sabah government.

Yesterday, Ismail said police arrested 649 people for various offences under the recovery movement control order (RMCO). Of that number, 606 were fined and 43 remanded.

Among the offences committed were failure to wear face masks (213), flouting physical distancing rules (151), activities at entertainment outlets (75), failure to record customers’ details (67) and others (143).
