PETALING JAYA: Malaysia were made to wait 14 years for the SEA Games women’s singles title until Goh Jin Wei ended the drought at KL 2017.
Another such long wait will not haunt the country now thanks to young shuttler S Kisona.
The 21-year-old’s admirable comeback gave her a surprise win over world No 51 Ruselli Hartawan in Manila today.
Despite losing a hard-fought first game 22-20, world No 98 Kisona came back strongly to take the second 21-14.
She then cruised to victory 21-13 in the deciding rubber over the Indonesian.
Kisona’s success marks the first time Malaysia have won back-to-back women’s singles gold at the regional Games since Sylvia Ng bagged three straight titles from 1973 to 1977.
