KUALA LUMPUR:
Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) showed why they are the country’s finest football team by cruising to a 3-0 win over Kedah in the Malaysia Cup final tonight.

In the one-sided match, Benjamin Mora’s men started bright and went 1-0 ahead thanks to a sweeping drive to the right bottom corner by Argentine Leandro Velazquez in the 27th minute.

National striker Safawi Rasid then hit home a freekick only seven minutes later for his 11th goal of the competition to give JDT a two-goal cushion heading into halftime.

Kedah, winners in 2016 and four-time finalists in the last five years, struggled to make a fist of it in the second half as JDT kept them on the backfoot.

And 13 minutes into the second half, the Red Eagles’ academy product Syafiq Ahmad put the result beyond doubt with the third goal.

The triumph at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil helped the Southern Tigers complete only their second Super League-Malaysia Cup double in history.

The six-time consecutive league champions did so in 2017 – when they lifted their first Malaysia Cup – by also beating Kedah 2-0 in the final.
