PETALING JAYA:
The Russians are not known for their sense of humour, and certainly not those in public office.

However, an interview by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov yesterday has shown that there are exceptions.

A 35-second clip from the interview has taken social media and broadcast networks around the world by storm as it shows Lavrov answering a question on the United States presidential race.

Amanpour made a reference to the feminist punk rock band Pussy Riot, which was also a protest group based in Moscow, being an embarrassment to the Russian government, and asked if Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had his own “pussy riot” moment recently.

Amanpour was referring to Trump’s 2005 comments leaked recently, where he was clearly heard telling a TV show host that “when you’re a star” women let you “grab them by the pussy.”

“English is not my mother tongue, I don’t know … that I would sound decent.

“There are so many pussies around your presidential campaign on both sides, that I prefer not to comment about this,” Lavrov said in a deadpan manner.

Amanpour then burst into laughter at his comments, saying: “Oh my goodness, I wasn’t expecting that,” and the clip ended with Lavrov too finally breaking into laughter.

Late last week, Trump came under fire from both Democrats and members of his own party for the 2005 comments, which were caught on a hot mic and published online.

Some Republicans even called for Trump to step down as the GOP nominee, but the New York businessman has apologised and vowed to continue his campaign.

Former Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain also withdrew his support for Trump.
