Seamless EV charging between Singapore and Malaysia soon a reality

Gentari and City Energy will work together to co-deploy EV chargers on each other’s network.

Petronas’ clean energy arm Gentari Sdn Bhd signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore-based City Energy to offer seamless electrical vehicle charging across the two countries.
PETALING JAYA:
Gentari Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Petronas, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based City Energy to offer seamless electric vehicle (EV) charging across the two nations.

City Energy is Singapore’s sole piped town gas producer and the nation’s gas utility provider.

Meanwhile, Gentari was formed in June 2022 as Malaysian oil firm Petronas’ clean energy arm.

The partnership will see Gentari work with “Go”, City Energy’s EV arm, to co-deploy publicly accessible chargers on each other’s EV networks.

Additionally, the two parties will explore and identify best practices for mobile roaming applications in both countries.

The Go mobile app currently offers 118 charging points across more than 50 locations in Malaysia. The collaboration is expected to accelerate the pace of charger deployments and EV network expansion.

City Energy CEO Perry Ong hopes that the collaboration will help reduce range anxiety for travellers who are commuting across the causeway.

“Today, we are partnering with City Energy to ensure a seamless driving experience for EV users between Malaysia and Singapore,” said Gentari CEO Shah Yang Razalli.

“We hope this collaboration will also become Gentari’s foray into the Singapore market to support regional development of charging networks within Asia Pacific,”

With a mission to be Asia Pacific’s preferred green mobility solutions provider, Gentari aims to capture 10% market share (around 25,000 charging points based on current estimates) across key markets in the region by 2030.

In the mid-term, Gentari aims to install 9,000 public charging points by 2026, with an anchored presence in Malaysia and India.

Exploring the export of hydrogen to Singapore

In addition to the EV collaboration, Gentari and City Energy signed another MoU to carry out hydrogen feasibility studies.

The move would see Gentari join the ongoing studies carried out by City Energy to explore alternative sources of hydrogen.

Michèle Azalbert, chief hydrogen officer at Gentari, highlighted that the group aspired to provide integrated clean energy solutions for customers in the Asia Pacific.

“We believe this partnership will be the first of many in Singapore. We are committed to support Singapore in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050,” he said.

Gentari aims to produce up to 1.2 million tonnes per annum of clean hydrogen to address the future increase of clean energy demand.

The collaboration with City Energy hopes to accelerate the adoption of clean hydrogen as an energy source and signifies Malaysia’s commitment towards providing clean hydrogen to Singapore.
