KUALA LUMPUR:
Cyberview Sdn Bhd has signed a memorandum of understanding with a consortium led by Worldwide Holdings Bhd, a leader in environmental management services, to explore opportunities in promoting new and renewable energy in Cyberjaya.

Cyberview Malaysia acting managing director Hafiz Ibrahim, in a statement, said the collaboration will explore the development of a floating solar power plant in Cyberjaya that can benefit from both parties’ combined expertises.

He said the collaboration will explore the feasibility of this innovative project and share both parties’ knowledge and resources to turn it into reality.

“Floating solar plants are considered more efficient than traditional ground-mounted solar plants. In addition, they can be installed on bodies of water that are not being used for other purposes.

“This means they do not compete with other land uses and can provide energy without requiring additional land,” he said.

Hafiz added that floating solar power farms in the lakes of Cyberjaya will also bring advantages to its residents.

“A carefully designed floating solar power farm would reduce the threat of climate change to lakes, such as evaporation.

“Furthermore, it could reduce wind speed and solar radiation by 10% across the entire lake, which offsets an entire decade of warming from climate change,” he said.

Elaborating further, Hafiz said such a project addresses the concerns expressed by natural resources, environment and climate change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and enables opportunities for more renewable energy projects in the city.

“For Cyberview, the floating solar power plant is in line with our recently launched environmental, social and governance framework and five-year plan, which includes the development of a low-carbon smart city as a key pillar,” he said.

Hafiz also said he was confident their efforts were aligned with the Malaysia Madani concept.
