PETALING JAYA:
YTL PowerSeraya Pte Ltd and TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Bhd, will partner to export 100 MW of electricity to Singapore, the first time Malaysian electricity will be supplied to Singapore via the newly upgraded interconnector.

YTL PowerSeraya, a wholly-owned subsidiary of YTL Power International Bhd, was awarded the electricity importer license for Malaysia on a two-year trial basis by the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) after a request for proposal (RFP) process in October 2021.

They will purchase electricity from TNB Pasir Gudang Energy Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned special vehicle company of TNB Genco.

YTL PowerSeraya CEO John Ng said: “YTL PowerSeraya, together with YTL Power International, is honoured to work with TNB Genco, to contribute our part in diversifying Singapore’s energy sources and further enhancing the nation’s energy security.

“We believe this is the first step in our vision of a strong Asean power grid, where electricity imports may eventually form a key part of Singapore’s energy mix,” he said.

The move marks TNB Genco’s maiden foray into Singapore per the Cross-Border Electricity Sales (CBES) guide. The guide was developed to facilitate cross-border electricity sales between Malaysia and neighbouring countries towards realising the vision of an Asean power grid.

TNB Genco managing director Nor Azman Mufti said the collaboration is a positive step for strengthening cross-border energy supply towards the realisation of a fully interconnected Asean Power Grid.

Both parties will work closely with the EMA and the Energy Commission to refine all technical settings and regulatory arrangements under the Electricity Import Framework and the agreement will be effective upon fulfilment of conditions precedent.

The collaboration made official today at an exchange of documents ceremony between TNB Genco and YTL PowerSeraya, was witnessed by Singapore minister for manpower Tan See Leng and international trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.
