Ringgit and Bursa hop in with zest

Forex and stock markets start Year of the Rabbit with gains.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The ringgit and Bursa Malaysia hopped into the first trading day of the Year of the Rabbit on a stronger note.

The ringgit extended its upbeat momentum to open higher against the US dollar while Bursa took the cue from Wall Street to start the new lunar year in positive territory.

The ringgit began the day at 4.2755/4.2805 against the greenback, up from last Friday’s close of 4.2830/4.2875.

Analysts attributed the positive returns to renewed buying interest in the currency as China’s continued re-opening to international travel helped sentiments to improve further.

On the local exchange, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) edged up 0.07 of a point to 1,500.40 from 1,500.33 at last Friday’s close.

Dealers said investors were still digesting new data on US manufacturing and earnings indices for market direction.

The market resumed trading today after taking a break on Monday and yesterday for the Chinese New Year holidays.
