Mixed opening to the week for Bursa Malaysia and ringgit

Bursa Malaysia retreats from gains last week on cautious sentiments following Wall Street decline.

KUALA LUMPUR:
It was a mixed opening to the new week for the local bourse and ringgit as Bursa Malaysia opened marginally lower while the local note edged up against the US dollar.

Bursa Malaysia retreated from its gains last week to open lower today due to cautious sentiments on the local exchange, taking its cue from the negative Wall Street performance last week, an analyst said.

At 9.10am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased by 0.20% or 2.90 points to 1,475.64 from last Friday’s closing of 1,478.54.

The market bellwether opened 1.82 points lower at 1,476.72.

On the broader market, decliners led advancers 174 versus 123, while 276 counters were unchanged, 1,672 untraded and 19 others suspended.

At 9.30am, the FBM-KLCI was down 6.19 points at 1,472.35, the FBMACE was at 5,465.03 up 3.09 points, and the FBMEmas was at 10,574.07 down 33.14 points.

Turnover was at 494.634 million shares valued at RM192.395 million.

Meanwhile, the ringgit opened higher against the US dollar today, boosted by higher oil prices as the greenback retreated, an analyst said.
