Business as usual for Umno-owned PWTC

Source says it is not a problem for government ministries and agencies to continue using PWTC as a venue for exhibitions and fairs despite change in ruling government.

PWTC is a popular exhibition spot for various events.
KUALA LUMPUR:
It’s business as usual for the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) and Menara Dato Onn, despite rumours to the contrary, after the fall of the Umno-led Barisan Nasional in the 14th general election (GE14).

Both PWTC, with its 25,615 square metre exhibition space, including halls and meeting rooms, and Menara Dato Onn are owned by Umno.

They are managed and maintained by Putrade Property Management Sdn Bhd.

However, a source told Bernama there would be changes to the management.

“Discussions on the matter are still on-going by the heads of departments,” she said.

Talk has it that Yahya Abdul Jalil, managing director of Gerbang Perdana Sdn Bhd, is expected to lead PWTC’s new management team.

He was previously reported as saying he had been appointed to Putrade’s board in his personal capacity, and not as a representative of Gerbang Perdana, to assist it using his experience in building management.

When asked about rumours of PWTC recording losses due to cancellation of events, the source said initially, there were some concerns among exhibitors, especially government-related agencies, on using the venue following the GE14 outcome.

However, the matter had been gradually resolved following discussions among the relevant stakeholders.

“I was made to understand that there is no problem in government ministries and agencies continuing to use the PWTC as a venue for exhibitions and fairs.

“This means there is no pulling back on bookings made and future bookings can also be made as usual without restrictions,” said the source.

On private bookings, she said there was no change in bookings by private clients and exhibitors.

“The demand trend is stable and planned events will be utilising the PWTC rooms and halls as usual.

“Events usually held at the PWTC, such as the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair 2019, the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) 2019 and Perfect Livin 2019, will continue, alongside many more throughout the year,” she said.

The source added that a statement is expected to be issued soon on changes to the PWTC management.

As for Menara Dato Onn, another source said tenants renting business and commercial space would remain in the building, despite changes in the ruling party.

Menara Dato Onn is a 40-storey office building with a total lettable area of 360,000 sq ft and currently serves as Umno’s headquarters.
